Honeycomb Shades
Honeycomb Shades by Solar Shield Blinds
Designed with an insulating air pocket between two layers of fabric, our Honeycomb Shades hold the harsh conditions out and help regulate your home, even during extreme heat or cold.
Energy Efficiency
No matter how new or old your windows are, Honeycomb Shades will increase the efficiency at your window and will create a more comfortable interior
When we need to help our clients insulate their home from drafty windows, or from cold and heat radiating straight through the glass, our go to solution is always our Solar Shield Blinds Honeycomb Shades. They're designed with an insulating air pocket between two layers of fabric, so they hold out the harsh conditions and help regulate the temperature of a home even in the most brutal times of the year.
Another added feature is the Top Down Bottom Up function. That lets you set your privacy line while keeping the view out that you want, and it lets you stack the fabric in just about any position you can imagine. They're also great for darkening a room for a better night's sleep, and they come in both light filtering and room darkening, which can even be combined in the one easy to use shade.
See How They Work
Top Down Bottom Up Honeycomb Shades deliver a variety of options for how you set your privacy and light control in your home
Simply move the upper and lower rails to your desired position to create the exact privacy and light control you want for your space. Stack the fabric at the top, middle, or bottom of the window to control your view wherever you want it.
Why Our Clients Choose Them
What honeycomb shades do for your home
- Insulation For Your WindowsThe air pocket between the two layers of fabric is what creates the insulation needed. It’s designed to hold the cold out in January and the heat out in July.
- Top Down Bottom UpLower the top rail to see out but have lower privacy. Close the whole shade for complete light control and privacy. Or, stack the fabric anywhere you want to create the perfect view. The choice is yours, and all with a simple touch of the shade.
- Room DarkeningSleep better with a more controlled light. Honeycomb shades fit tighter to the edges of the window for more light control and maximum privacy.
Whether you need privacy, light control, heat protection, energy efficiency, or you just want to add an element of design to a room, our Honeycomb Shades are a perfect solution. Energy efficiency is the one that brings most people to us though. If a room is uncomfortable rather than just bright, this is usually the first thing we recommend.
The cell structure of the honeycomb shade fabric traps a pocket of still air right up against the glass, and that's what does the work. In a Midwest January that pocket is the difference between a room you use and a room you shut the door on, and come July it's holding the heat out instead.
Top Down Bottom Up is worth asking about. It lets you set your privacy line while you keep the view you want, and you can stack the fabric just about anywhere. If your window faces a neighbor, a sidewalk or a road, it’s the perfect solution that solves it without losing your entire view.

Yes. Our custom window treatments come with transferable warranties. If you move, the warranty continues, which means the next owner is covered the same way you were.
They reduce heat transfer at the window, which is where a large share of a room’s loss happens. How much you notice depends on how bad your glass is now. On single pane or older double pane windows the difference is obvious. On new construction with good glass it is real but smaller. We have written up the detail in a separate article.
Double cell insulates better and is the right call on north-facing windows, older glass, and any room that is already uncomfortable. Single cell stacks tighter and looks lighter, which matters on short windows.
Yes. Blackout cell fabric plus a snug fit gives a very dark room. Add side channels if you want it darker still.
No, but do not soak them. A vacuum on a brush attachment once or twice a year handles it. Our use and maintenance guide covers the specifics.
The fabric carries a lifetime warranty, and the warranty is transferable, so if you move the next owner is covered the same way you were.
No. Room darkening fabric blocks the light coming through the shade, but an inside mount leaves small light gaps at the sides. An outside mount blocks more light, though it may not look as clean. A privacy light block along the edges closes most of the gap, and side channels take it further. Two things worth knowing before you order: white room darkening fabrics tend to read a little gray because of the liner, and we recommend against a fabric wrapped headrail on a room darkening shade.
Motorized Top Down Bottom Up is available up to 120 inches wide. The Cordless Lift and Lock Top Down Bottom Up carries a single lift cord on the outer edges and goes up to 84 inches wide. On a motorized Top Down Bottom Up the bottom rail has some limits on how it moves, which your Design Specialist will walk you through at the consultation.
Bathrooms and bedrooms, or any window that faces a neighbor or the street. You keep privacy at eye level and let the daylight in over the top. It is available cordless and motorized, and the Trilight version pairs it with a sheer pleated shade.
Yes. Honeycomb shades have the smallest headrail of any window covering we carry, so they suit shallow casings, and they stack compact when raised so the view stays clear.
The exterior side is white regardless of the interior color, so the house reads consistent from the street. Keep in mind that exterior colors and shadows outside the window can affect how the shade color reads from inside the room.
Consider the window height first. On a tall window a cordless shade may need an extension pole to reach the rail, so for high or hard to reach windows we usually suggest a cord loop or a motor.
Yes. Hold downs are available for the bottom rail so the shade stays put when the door swings, and for sliding glass doors there is a vertical honeycomb that opens side to side and stacks to one side.
