Automation In Washington

Motorized Shades & Automation in Washington, IL

A newer Washington, Illinois home has windows nobody can reach without a ladder, and an older one near the Square has walls nobody wants to open up for wiring. Our Solar Shield Blinds Automation solves both, with motorized shades and blinds that run on rechargeable batteries and work on every product we sell, inside and out.

Where It Fits In Washington

Where Automation Makes Sense In Washington

Motors earn their keep on the windows that are hard to reach, hard to keep up with, or best run on a schedule.

  • Upper Rows Of GlassThe top windows in a two story family room get motorized shades, charged by a small solar panel or wired in during construction.
  • A Wall Of WindowsOne button lowers every shade across an open living space to the same height, so the line across the windows stays even.
  • Older HomesBattery motors install like a manual shade, so a house near downtown gets automation without opening a wall.
  • The Covered PatioExterior Patio Shades run on the same app, and sun and wind sensors can raise and lower them when no one is home.

How You Control Them

A remote to start, and schedules once you're used to it

The Solar Shield Blinds remote works out of the box with nothing else installed, and a wall switch by the door is easy for everyone in the house. Add the Smart Hub or our USB Bridge for app control, scenes, schedules, and voice control through Alexa, Google or Siri.

Schedules do the most good. Set the bedroom shades to open with your alarm, the west windows to drop before the late afternoon sun, and everything to close at sunset, which comes early in a Central Illinois December. The shades keep to the schedule whether you're home or not.

Most existing homes in Washington get rechargeable motors that need no wiring. On a new build or a big remodel, hardwired motors in low voltage or 110 volt can go in with the rest of the electrical, and your Design Specialist goes over both at your free consultation.

Straight Answers

Automation questions from Washington homeowners

No. In most homes the battery sits inside the headrail and the shade installs just like a manual one. A solar panel can keep the battery charged on a window with a good view of the sun.

No. Batteries need a charge every 6 to 9 months, and the included charger fills one in 4 to 6 hours. An optional solar panel on an east, west or south window keeps the battery topped up.

Yes. Every product we sell can be motorized, so the shades inside and the Exterior Patio Shades out back can share one app, along with sun and wind sensors.

Yes. Our USB Bridge connects many motorized shades and blinds to Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri Shortcuts, plus SmartThings and IFTTT, and our team does the programming before leaving.

On most products, no, since the battery sits inside the headrail. Honeycomb Shades with internal batteries have a visible charge port on the front, and an external battery pack needs an extra 1 inch of depth.

On some lines, yes. Text or email us a picture of the shade, and we'll say up front whether it can take a motor or whether a new motorized shade is the smarter buy.
