Sun Protection

Protection you can see

The sun can have very damaging effects on the interior of your home or office space. Shielding your space from damaging UV rays is where we got our name.

One of the most popular requests we get from our clients is to help them protect the inside of their home from harsh sunlight, heat, and glare. Our goal is to shield your home from that damaging sunlight while you still get to enjoy natural filtered light, and you can keep your view when you prefer. Whether you want to soften the light, block it out completely, or roll them up to let in all the brightness, roller shades give you the control you're looking for. With a wide range of fabrics, colors, and styles, they can be easily customized to suit any interior, and any style.

Roller shades are about as simple as a window covering gets, and that's a big part of why so many of our clients choose them. There's nothing to dust and no strings to get tangled. Raise it and the shade rolls up into a three inch roll at the top of the opening. Lower it and you've got one clean fabric that offers privacy, light control, and a pop of color and texture.

The fabric choice is what matters the most. Roller shade fabrics have an openness factor, which identifies how much of the weave is open. A 10% screen cuts some glare and heat, but keeps the view out very crisp, enough to see what’s happening outside during the day. A 3% screen gives you good daytime privacy and a much softer view out while blocking even more direct heat and sunlight. Decorative and light filtering fabrics provide full privacy, both day and night, while also blocking 100% of direct sunlight into a space, all while allowing a soft glow of light through the fabric. And, blackout and room darkening fabrics have no openness at all, helping create dark spaces even during the day.

We have thousands of roller shade fabrics to choose from, so there's plenty to look at! That's exactly why we bring the shop to you. Your Design Specialist will go through an assessment with you to make sure we are guiding you to the correct type of fabric first, then we will help you choose the best texture, pattern, color, and style for your home or office. You are never alone in this process, and our goal is to make the selection process as efficient as possible, while making sure you know all of your options.

We get called into homes and offices for a lot of different reasons. Things like the sun sits on the hardwood every afternoon, or the TV is unwatchable from three until six, or the neighbors can see straight into the front room after dark, computer monitors can’t be viewed at certain times of day, the room heats up too much in the afternoon. Roller shades will solve all these common problems, but choosing the correct fabric, and the right operating system will make all the difference in your overall user experience, and comfort of your home or office.

Every shade is custom made to the exact measurements we take in your home, and nothing we offer is stock or “ready made” like what you get from online retailers or big box stores. Our team of professionals has the experience to help you plan your project and finish it to your satisfaction, and we guarantee it!

Frequently Asked Questions

With thousands of fabrics to choose from, there is a lot to look at. They fall into 3 groups: Screens, Decorative Fabrics, Blackout Fabrics. Our Design Specialists help you with color and texture selection. We bring the swatches and samples to your home so you can see the colors in your own lighting and in your own space, as part of your free in-home consultation.

Four: Chain Loop, Cordless (Child Safe), PowerWand (Child Safe), Motorized / Automated (Child Safe). Your Design Specialist helps you work out the right one for your windows.

Our typical lead time is 4 to 6 weeks from order to final installation. Most of our projects are completed within one installation day.

We only carry products that hold up, and we back them with our No Questions Asked Guarantee to protect your investment. If something is wrong, call us and we will put it right.

Yes. Our custom window treatments come with transferable warranties. If you move, the warranty continues, which means the next owner is covered the same way you were.

It depends on what's bothering you. For an office with glare on a screen we usually land on 3 to 5 percent. For a living room where you want to keep your view, 5 to 10 percent. For a street facing room where you want daytime privacy, 1 to 3 percent. For a bedroom, blackout with side channels. Your Design Specialist will bring the samples so you can see the difference against your own window before you decide.

They help a great deal. A solar screen turns away a good share of the sun's heat before it ever becomes heat in your room, and the tighter the weave the more it stops. If you've got a west facing wall of glass that's brutal in July, an exterior shade mounted outside the window will always outperform anything hung on the inside, and we install those too.

Yes. Ask for a room darkening fabric instead of a true blackout, or run two shades on one headrail, a solar screen and a blackout together, so you can pick depending on the time of day.

That depends on the fabric and the tube. Very wide openings usually work better as two or three shades sharing a single headrail rather than one enormous shade. The seams line up, the look stays clean, and every shade stays nice and light to operate.

The fabric carries a lifetime warranty, and the warranty is transferable, so if you move the next owner is covered the same way you were.

Not on its own. A roller shade is one flat panel, so light gaps down the sides are inherent, and on a bright day they create a halo around the whole shade. Blackout fabric does not give a full blackout without side and bottom channels, which is why we recommend them for bedrooms. Shallow casings leave a privacy gap for the same reason, and an out of square window makes the gaps more noticeable. Your Design Specialist will point all of this out at the window before you order.

Standard is an open roll, where you see the fabric rolled on the tube. If you would rather cover it, the top treatments are a curved cassette, a square cassette, a fascia, a fabric cornice, or a wood cornice, and the cassettes and fascia can be wrapped in the same fabric as the shade. Every top treatment projects at least 3 inches from the wall. A dual roller shade, two fabrics on one bracket, is available behind a 5 inch fascia.

Yes, and they are our usual alternative to vertical blinds on a sliding glass door, especially where a handle leaves little room. Magnetic hold downs keep the bottom rail in place when the door swings. Double French doors, center hinged doors, and doors with deep casings need a closer look, because the roller tube has to clear the swing of the door.

Roller shades are one of the best choices for wide and tall openings, and motorization gives the widest range of motor types, power sources, and sizes. Two things to know: a very narrow shade is more prone to skew as it rolls, and a cordless shade on a tall window can be a reach, so we check the window height before recommending cordless.

The continuous loop beaded chain mounts to the side of the wall or casing, and a chain guide is required for the shade to operate properly. It also anchors the chain so it is child safe.

The color outside the window comes through the weave. Exterior colors and shadows outside the glass can change how a screen fabric reads from inside, which is one more reason we hold the samples up against your own window at the consultation.
