Specialty Shape Window Solutions by Solar Shield Blinds
An arch over the front door, an angle top in the great room, a round window on the stair landing. We template the shape on site and build the covering to it, so the window keeps its lines and you get your light and privacy back.

Specialty Shape Windows: What Can You Do To Cover Them?
Arches, angles, ovals and curves are there to be looked at. Covering one without ruining it is the job, and it's a normal week for us.
If you have a window that is an odd shape, don't worry, we have a nicer name for it than "odd". We call those Specialty Shaped Windows. Often times these windows are used to accentuate the architecture of a home or office building by using arches, angles, ovals, curves, and a number of other shapes. While specialty shaped windows look amazing and fit the look of your structure, they often present many issues our clients are dealing with. Excessive heat and cold pushing in through that open glass, privacy issues, rooms that are too bright during certain times of the day and so on. If you have a specialty shape window, you know what we're talking about, and it's most likely why you're still reading.
We have a number of different products and styles that are designed to give you the control you need over the naked glass of your specialty shaped window. We have an option for virtually any shape: Arched windows, angle top windows, eyebrow arched windows, oval windows, octagon windows, hexagon windows, and windows we don't even know what to call them. Let us know what problem you're having at your window and we'll help you create the perfect solution to be able to use your space more comfortably.

The First Answer For A Shape
Plantation Shutters
No matter what shape of the window you have, Solar Shield Blinds Plantation Shutters can be customized to fit, and still provide you with the function you need. Shutters are the singular best product to use when it comes to specialty shape windows because they can be custom made to follow every line of the window, and still offer louvers that tilt open and close, and doors that swing open on hinges. This allows you to still control your privacy and the light in the room to help you create a more comfortable space. Angles, curves, circles, arches, half ovals, half circles, eyebrow arches, quarter circles, trapezoids, and even windows that we don't even know what to call them (like the one pictured). We can assure that your specialty shape window will still look amazing, but offer the functionality that you prefer.

Energy Efficiency In A Shape
Honeycomb Shades
Our Solar Shield Blinds Honeycomb Shades can be cut to fit a number of shapes to give you energy efficiency, light control, and privacy on windows that otherwise might be very difficult to cover. Some honeycomb specialty shape shades can be functional, or partially functional, while others are stationary and don't ever move once installed. Our Design Specialists will help you find the perfect product option, which does always depend on the shape and size of the window.

Roller Shades
Roller Shades can be used on specialty shaped windows when there are straight lines. While we do have access to some arched options for roller shades, typically we use these on angle top windows or trapezoid shaped windows. This gives a stationary product that matches the other roller shades in the lower windows of a room and creates the light and privacy control desired to make the room more comfortable and inviting. Our Design Specialists will help you determine the best product for your specialty shape windows.

Roman Shades
Roman Shades and Natural Woven Roman Shades can be custom made with specialty shaped valances that can follow curves or straight lines to allow us room to mount a functional shade below. The goal is to keep the look of the architecture, while creating the light, privacy, and energy efficiency the window needs to create a more comfortable living space. Roman Shades can be operated by using a cordless lift system, a chain loop control, and they can even be fully motorized using our Solar Shield Blinds Automation options. If you have a specialty shaped window that you are unsure how to cover, let us know as we'd love to help you solve that problem!
Drapery And Soft TreatmentsWorth Knowing
Before you cover a shape
Templated on site
A shaped window has no stock size. We make a pattern of the actual opening during the consultation, the covering is built to that template, and our Install Techs hang it true. Nothing comes off a stock chart, and that is what lets an arch look like it was always part of the house.
Fixed or functional
Shutters tilt and swing whatever the shape. Honeycomb specialty shapes come functional, partially functional or stationary, and Roller Shades on an angle top or a trapezoid stay fixed to match the operating shades below. The shape and size of the window decide it, and we'll tell you which before you order.
Lead times and bare glass
Plantation Shutters run 8 to 10 weeks from order to install, and other interior treatments average 4 to 6. Free paper temporary shades go up on every window you order for, right away, and come down on install day. Most projects are installed in less than a day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Virtually any. Arched, angle top, eyebrow arched, oval, octagon and hexagon windows all have an option, and so do the ones we don't have a name for yet. The shape and the size decide whether the covering operates or stays fixed, and your Design Specialist will tell you which at the consultation, before anything is ordered.
Plantation Shutters. A shutter is the one product that can be built to follow every line of the opening and still give you louvers that tilt and panels that swing open on hinges, so light and privacy stay in your hands. Honeycomb, Roller and Roman Shades each earn their place on certain shapes, and that comes down to the window in front of us.
No. A shaped window is templated on site rather than measured with a tape. We make a pattern of the actual opening, the covering is built to that template, and then it's hung true. Nothing comes off a stock chart, which is why an arch, a french door and a plain bedroom window in the same house can all look like they were meant to be there.
That depends on the shape and size of the window and on what sits below it. A honeycomb arch comes as a stationary fan-fold or a fully functional motorized arch, and a shutter arch tilts like the rest of the panel. If the window under the arch is already covered and operable, a stationary arch above it keeps the look clean. If the arch is the only glass in the room, build it to move.
Roller Shades want straight lines, so we use them on angle top and trapezoid windows, where a stationary shade matches the other Roller Shades in the lower windows of the room. We do have access to some arched options, but for a true curve the answer is nearly always a Plantation Shutter or a honeycomb arch.
Yes. Roman Shades and Natural Woven Roman Shades can be made with a specialty shaped valance that follows the curve or the angle, leaving room for a functional shade to mount below it. The shade below runs on a cordless lift, a chain loop or a motor through our Solar Shield Blinds Automation options, so the architecture stays on show and the room still gets its privacy.
Yes. Every product we carry can be motorized. Rechargeable motors need no wiring in an existing house, honeycomb arches come as fully functional motorized arches, and Roman Shades under a shaped valance run through our Solar Shield Blinds Automation options: a remote, the app on your phone or tablet, wall switches, or your voice.
Plantation Shutters run 8 to 10 weeks from order to install, and the other interior treatments average 4 to 6 weeks, shaped or not. You won't sit behind bare glass in the meantime: we hang free paper temporary shades on every window you order for, right away, and take them down on install day. Most projects are installed in less than a day by our own full time Install Techs.
Yes, and gladly. A good share of these jobs reach us because somebody else already said no, and that is the whole point of the YES Experience: if there's a solution for a tricky installation we'll use it, and if there isn't one we'll develop it. Send a photo with something in frame for scale and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a straightforward job, a template job, or one of the rare ones that genuinely can't be covered.
Who Turns Up
The people who measure it are the people who hang it
Nothing here is subcontracted. The crew that arrives to install works for Solar Shield Blinds, which is why there is never a question about whose job it is when something needs adjusting later.
