Exterior Patio Shades
Exterior Patio Shades by Solar Shield Blinds
Designed and built to withstand harsh weather, our Solar Shield Blinds Exterior Patio Shades give you privacy, serious wind control with a 75 mph rating, bug and critter protection, and cover from rain, snow, and ice. True outdoor living, at the touch of a button.
Year Round Outdoor Living
Live outdoors, all year long
Our Solar Shield Blinds Exterior Patio Shades give you the ability to live outdoors, all year long. Keep out the wind, rain, snow, and ice. Control your light with the push of a button. And create privacy to enjoy your space the way you want.
Exterior Patio Shades are designed and built to withstand the harsh weather we get out here, and ours do a lot more than basic shade and sun control. They provide ample privacy, serious wind control with a 75 mph rating, bug and critter protection, and additional protection from the elements such as rain, snow, and ice. When you're ready to open the patio back up, the shade retracts into its housing at the top and the view is yours again.
We build motorized screens for decks, patios and pergolas, run them in wind rated side tracks for maximum strength, and put the weather control at the push of a button. A single shade can cover an opening up to 30 feet wide by 20 feet tall.
Drag the handle down to close the shades, and back up to open them again.
Why Our Clients Choose Them
Our Exterior Patio Shades block the wind and create true outdoor living
- Stop The WindThe biggest reason you need to pack up your outdoors and hurry inside is the wind bringing uncomfortable air into your outdoor patio space. A cold breeze, a heavy gust of wind, sideways rain, blinding snow, and ice accumulation. All of these things enter your covered outdoor patio space because the wind forces it into the space. Close our exterior patio shades and experience the power of our solar screens! Block 95% of wind and moisture, all while creating 100% privacy and creating a shaded comfortable space.
- Built In ShadeWith the simple push of a button you can transform your outdoor patio space into a shaded oasis. Our solar screen exterior patio shades come in different levels of openness so you can choose how much shade you want. When you want the full sun or open air, just hit the button on your Solar Shield Blinds remote and open up to the great outdoors!
- Extended Outdoor LivingWe always think of outdoor living as a “nice weather” activity. But the truth is, with the correct shades installed on your covered deck or patio, you can control the weather and create more comfortable outdoor living, year round. With a good heat source you can warm your space to comfortable levels, even in the middle of winter. Chilly fall nights? No problem, you can watch every quarter of the football game. No more cold wind to send you indoors too early. Extend your outdoor living and the square footage of your home with exterior patio shades by Solar Shield Blinds.
When it comes to outdoor patio shades and exterior shades, there are a lot of options on the market. Knowing which one to choose can be overwhelming, and knowing why to choose the right product and options is where we come in! We have tested many different brands and systems that are currently on the market. We have put them through some extreme, real world tests. The biggest test is the extreme wind that we get here in Kansas City due to the open plains. Early on we discovered some serious issues with “light duty” outdoor shades. They look similar, but aren’t built for the extreme elements we face here. Those shade systems also typically do not have a manufacturer wind rating as they don’t want to risk the liability of offering that up. We found that these “light duty” systems were prone to failure, creating a very frustrating user experience for homeowners when they just want to close down their patio area.
Our solution to this was to find a system that was built and designed for extreme weather. We have put together a product that we are so confident in, that we give it a 75mph rating, and that is more of a suggestion than a hard warning. Personally, we don’t ever raise our shades during storms and wind events, no matter the forecast. The same system we use here in the midwest is used in coastal cities as a hurricane protection system and is rated to 153mph (when paired with Omegatex / Kevlar screens). The strength in our Solar Shield Blinds Exterior Patio Shade system comes from our Self-Adjusting Tracks. The SA Tracks have the ability to flex up to ¾” on each side to allow plenty of flexibility to the shade when it’s under extreme wind pressure. They also allow the tracks to flex in during cold months when the screen wants to shrink due to the cold temperatures. This flexibility allows for smooth function, year round, and incredible durability when harsh weather hits. When you can stop the wind, you can create comfort. Removing the chaos from a space allows for calm. That’s what our shades do, and it’s how we help our clients bring elevated comfort to their outdoor living spaces.

Commercial
Commercial Exterior Patio Shades
Meddy's patio was one of their most popular features, and it shut down every winter, which meant they could not seat enough guests at one time.
- Exterior shades cut out the cold wind coming through the openings
- With the wind stopped, the overhead heaters could finally build heat in the space
- Snow and ice stay outside instead of blowing across the tables
- The patio now seats guests year round, from the same floor space
- Wind, sun, privacy or bugs on a commercial patio all have the same answer
The same shades hold the wind on the Rock Island Bridge, a 100 year old train bridge turned venue, where we installed 37 of them 66 feet above the Kansas River.
Outdoor Living In The Winter
Watch how we create outdoor living, even in the middle of winter
This video shows an outdoor patio on a 30 degree day in February. With our shades lowered, the ceiling heaters turned on, the table top fire pit fired up, and an overhead ceiling fan helping to circulate the air, this space heats up from 30 degrees to over 60 degrees to give this space a warm, comfortable feel, even during a midwest winter day. This is the power of our Exterior Patio Shades by Solar Shield Blinds. These shades are using our 95% solar screen fabric that reduces air movement by 95% and helps keep warm air in, even in the cold winter months.

Screen Colors
Exterior Patio Shade Screen Colors
We will help you make the correct selections for your space, but here are the screen colors available for our Exterior Patio Shades. Screens come in 80%, 95%, 97% and 99% openness, plus a fully blackout 0% material, and the openness decides how much airflow and view get through, so it's chosen alongside the color rather than after it.

Hardware Colors
Exterior Patio Shade Hardware Colors
All of our Exterior Patio Shades come with heavy duty powder coated aluminum hardware for the Headbox, Side Tracks, Bottom Rail, and any spacers or extrusions. We have 5 stock colors to choose from, which work in most cases very well, but we can also create custom colors for our hardware as well. All of our aluminum hardware is backed by a manufacturer lifetime warranty.
Self-Adjusting Tracks
The Correct Side Tracks Make All The Difference
Our Solar Shield Blinds Exterior Patio Shades are designed to protect your space against wind. Not all outdoor shades are created equal, and our SA Tracks are one of the things that make our shades stand out, and stand up to the harsh winds that we experience here in the Kansas City area. SA Tracks allow our screen fabrics to flex in strong winds, and also help to tighten the fabric back up when the wind dies down and there's no pressure on the screens. Our rigid powder-coated aluminum tracks provide ample hold and strength during windy conditions, giving you peace of mind that your shades will hold up to the beating that most shades can't. Our SA Tracks also allow the tracks to move inward when trying to lower the shade in windy conditions, preventing common wind related issues like rewraps from happening. Wind is always an important consideration when operating your Exterior Patio Shades, so please make sure you follow the recommendations given by our Install Techs.

Built For Weather
The details that decide it
Wind Rated Side Tracks
Our side tracks hold the screen fabric at both edges and flex with it in strong wind, which is what earns the 75 mph wind rating and prevents the rewraps that cause most wind related failures.
Powder Coated Aluminum Hardware
Every one of our exterior patio shades comes with heavy duty powder coated aluminum hardware on the headbox, side tracks, bottom rail and any spacers or extrusions. Five stock colors, custom colors available, and the hardware is backed by a manufacturer lifetime warranty.
Manual Or Motorized
Track guided shades are motorized because of the overall weight of the product. Our cable guided systems can be operated by hand or by motor.
Remote, App And Sensors
Operate them at the push of a button on the remote, from the app on your phone or tablet, or let the sun and wind sensors lower and raise them for you.
What They Stop
Serious wind, rain, snow and ice, bugs and critters, the afternoon sun, and the view in from the neighbors.
On Install Day
Our own Install Techs complete most installations within one day, and a large or multi level job can need a second day. We clean up, take the packaging away, and run every shade with you before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Our Solar Shield Blinds Exterior Patio Shades carry a 75 mph wind rating, and the strength comes from our Self-Adjusting Tracks. They hold the screen fabric down both edges and flex up to ¾" on each side when the shade is under wind pressure, then pull the fabric tight again when the wind dies down. That rating is more of a suggestion than a hard warning, so leave your shades in the down position in windy or stormy weather to avoid damage. We never raise our own shades during a storm, no matter the forecast.
They will. With the fabric sealed in the side tracks, the opening is closed off, so rain, snow, ice, leaves, cottonwood and bugs stay on the outside of the screen. That's what lets a covered patio work in January and in July, and it's why a restaurant patio with our shades can seat guests through the winter.
Yes, and how well depends on the color you choose. Darker screens give the clearest view out, because a dark weave absorbs light instead of scattering it. Lighter screens brighten the space underneath but soften the view. Your Design Specialist shows you both in daylight at your patio before you choose.
Yes, with the right fabric. A moire effect will be present when screen shades are installed over any fixed bug screen, which is a wavy pattern where the two meshes overlap. A 1% screen is required for this type of application, because it reduces the moire effect substantially. Our Design Specialists will go over this in person so you know exactly what to expect.
They will. Lowered, the shades protect furniture, rugs and accessories from direct UV rays, harsh winds and rain, which extends their life. You keep a view out to the yard while the patio stays shaded, comfortable and completely private.
Start with how you use the space. For a patio where people sit and look out at the yard, Flat Black, Black or Charcoal keep the view sharpest. Tobacco and Brown suit cedar, a stained deck or brick. The lighter neutrals such as Bone, Stone and White keep it bright underneath at the cost of some view. We bring the samples so you can hold them up against the house.
Yes. An exterior patio shade needs a header to mount to, so it works under a covered patio, a screened porch, a pergola or a deck with a roof. We also mount them over windows, patio doors and garage doors. On an open deck the answer is a Retractable Awning first to create the cover, then shades that drop from it. We'll look at what you have and tell you which order makes sense.
Yes. Our shades can be installed when openings are out of square, which is common on decks and covered patios. If the concrete has runoff and the floor is crooked, we can make the shade with a bias cut, where the bottom of the screen is cut to match the angle of the runoff. When the shade raises it will hold that angle and not look straight, but when it lowers it seals to the crooked surface. We cover this in depth during your consultation.
Almost all of them. Track guided shades are motorized because of the weight of the product, and that's the system that earns the wind rating. Our cable guided shades can be operated by hand or by motor. Either way, the whole benefit depends on the shade being down at the right time, which is why most of our clients go motorized.
Yes. Motorized Exterior Patio Shades run from a remote or a wall switch, and the Solar Shield Blinds Smart Hub adds app control from your phone or tablet, voice control, scheduling, and integration with your interior shades and smart home. Ask about the sun and wind sensors as well, which lower and raise the shade for you without anyone touching a button.
We recommend them on every motorized exterior shade. The sun sensor drops the shade when the afternoon light gets strong, so the patio is ready before you walk out. The wind sensor retracts it when the wind picks up past a set point, which protects the shade when nobody is home, and that's when the weather tends to arrive.
No. Typically only 1 outlet or junction box is needed for our motorized shades. Where there is no power, battery operated motors are available, and your Design Specialist will plan the power with you at the consultation.
They help retain warmth when used with an external heating source. Our 95% solar screen fabric reduces air movement by 95%, so the heat from ceiling heaters or a fire pit stays in the space. One of our patios went from 30 degrees to over 60 on a February day with the shades down and the heaters on. The area needs ventilation when a propane heater, grill or fire pit is in use.
Yes. With the wind cut down, your grill or outdoor kitchen cooks more evenly. We recommend additional ventilation so grill smoke can safely exit the space.
A single shade can cover an opening from 3 feet to 30 feet wide and up to 20 feet tall. Every shade is built to the opening we measure, so a wide span, a pergola bay or a two story deck each get their own frame rather than something pulled off a shelf. A shade larger than 126" wide and 126" tall will have a visible seam, and we can customize where that seam is placed.
They're one of the best commercial investments we install. Meddy's in Liberty had a patio that shut down every winter and took a chunk of the seating with it. Our exterior shades cut the cold wind, the overhead heaters could finally build heat, and the patio now seats guests year round. The same shades hold the wind on the Rock Island Bridge, 66 feet above the Kansas River.
It is. Exterior shades and shutters run 8 to 10 weeks from order to install, compared with 4 to 6 weeks for interior window treatments, because every frame is built to your opening. If you want the patio working by summer, book the measure in the spring. Your quote is exact, itemized, and held for 180 days.
Our own full time Install Techs complete most installations within one day, and a large or multi level job can need a second day. When they're done they clean up, take the packaging away, and run every shade with you so you know how the remote, the app and the sensors work before they leave.
Yes. The headbox, side tracks, bottom rail and spacers are heavy duty powder coated aluminum, and the hardware carries a manufacturer lifetime warranty. On top of that our Carefree Guarantee covers you with Five Year Service on defects, one Life Happens repair, and Lifetime Product coverage on materials and workmanship for as long as you own the home.
Very little. Our screens are close to self cleaning, thanks to a front and back brush guard at the headbox that agitates both sides of the screen every time it opens and closes. That knocks loose dust and dirt, and pushes away any bugs trying to ride up into the roll tube.
Yes. Our Carefree Guarantee is transferable, so the coverage follows the address. If you sell the house, the next owner is covered the same way you were, and a set of exterior shades that already work is one more thing a buyer doesn't have to think about.
