How Our Custom Direct-Mount Shutters Preserved A 100-Year-Old Home’s Architecture
Laura wasn’t asking for anything unusual.
She wanted plantation shutters on the front windows of her home.
Most of those windows were straightforward, and the new shutters changed the look of the house right away.
But one window stopped the project cold. A handcrafted, cross-pattern window, built into the home more than 100 years ago.

Two other companies had already looked at it. Both gave her the same answer:
“Shutters won’t work there.”
Their fix was to mount a plain square shade above the window and cover it completely.
Sure, that would block the light. It would also hide the antique trim and erase one of the most unique details on the house.
For Laura, that wasn’t a solution.
What We Saw That Other Companies Missed
When we looked at the window, we saw something different.
It had depth.
The trim had enough room to mount shutters inside the opening instead of over it. That changed everything.
Instead of covering the window, we could custom build shutters that followed its exact shape, and keep the architecture on show instead of hiding it.
The Solution: Direct-Mount Shutters Built Into The Window
To make that work, everything had to be exact.
We made a full-size template of the window on a large sheet of paper, tracing every angle and every intersection of the cross pattern by hand.

That template went to our manufacturer, who built the shutters to match it precisely.
No guessing. No adjusting on site. On a window like this, even a small mistake would be obvious.
When the shutters came back, every detail had to line up:
- Panel shape
- Hinge placement
- Louver alignment
- Closure points
And they did.
Installation Day: No Adjustments, No Surprises
On installation day, the panels fit exactly as planned.
No forcing pieces into place.
No field modifications.
No compromises.
The shutters sat cleanly inside the trim, following the exact lines of the window.

The Result: It Looks Like It Was Always Part Of The Home
From the street, the new shutters match every other window on the house.

From the inside, Laura finally has privacy on a window that faces her porch, something that window had never given her.
And most importantly, the original 100-year-old craftsmanship is still fully visible.

Nothing was covered. Nothing was hidden.
After being told “no” twice, Laura got exactly what she wanted: a custom solution that respects the home instead of working around it.
When Other Companies Say No, We Look Closer
Most window covering companies stick to rectangles.
We specialize in the windows that don’t fit a standard template, and we’ve been designing and installing custom window coverings for them since 2006:
- Arched windows
- Octagons
- Ovals
- Bay windows
- Angle-top windows
- Rare angled-bottom designs
- And countless custom architectural shapes
Each one gets shutters or blinds built to its exact shape, so the character of your home stays intact.
That’s the YES Experience. We don’t walk away from tricky shapes. We say “Yes” to the projects others call impossible.
Bottom Line
This wasn’t about covering a window.
It was about respecting one.
Look closer, and the “impossible” window works.
